IcelandAir Hotel Akureyri
After we decided to drive North to Akureyri on this trip to Iceland, I started looking into hotels in the area. There really weren’t very many options other than budget hotels, so when I came across the fairly new IcelandAir Hotel in town, it seemed like the perfect combination of Scandinavian design and a great location.
LOVE
Location- Right in the center of town, the hotel is really easy to get to and a great venture point to head anywhere in the area.
Space for luggage– The room had lots of built-in areas to set things and store our luggage, so it was nice to be able to spread out.
Easy Parking – The hotel has a large parking lot right around the hotel, so it’s easy to park your car while you stay.
Breakfast – While it wasn’t part of our reservation, the breakfast each morning was really great with a good selection of hot and cold items.
DIDN’T LOVE
Dorm-like Room – The room was set up very much like a dorm: cheap curtains, 2 twin beds (which we ultimately pushed together), Ikea type furniture and a strange shower that sort of extended into the room. It felt very college-esque.
Window Shades – Being that it never truly got dark while we were in Iceland in May, great window shades to block out that bright midnight sun are a must. This hotel really fell down on that, and light leaked out all around the window curtains.
TIPS
Checking our Early – If you plan to check out early or head out for an adventure early in the morning while staying here, you have to let them know the evening before since they only have a security guard on duty at night and they lock the front doors. We left to shoot Godafoss waterfall around 3:30am (sunrise) one day and came downstairs to find the doors locked. We eventually found a way out but it was kind of a pain. So let them know the evening before to arrange to have someone there.

What would be your overall score of this hotel out of 5? Is the room a big downfall, or did the location and other perks make up for it? Was it a comfortable stay?

I’d say 3. It was fine for a couple nights but nothing too exciting. Location was good and it was new which helped, it just felt very hostel/dormish which I’m not a super fan of!
