On Sunday of our wine country trip, we only had a half day before our flight home so we decided to spend the morning having a lazy few hours at our hotel in Sacramento. When we did head out, we drove down to Sacramento’s Old Town. Old Sacramento is a western themed area of the city down on the Riverfront, full of shops, restaurants and museums. We wandered around a bit, had lunch and then walked along the riverfront before heading to the airport.Β While Sacramento wasn’t my favorite city ever, Β I enjoyed seeing it and adding it to the list of places we’ve been.Β

Sacramento is really big on Gold Rush history, nearly every elementary school books has something about Sacramento and Marshall finding gold in the American River. Over labor day weekend we have “GOld Rush Days” where all of the streets in old sac are covered in dirt and they theme the whole area back to gold rush days. It’s usually hot and packed.

Wow, I never knew that’s what Sacramento looks like! I really need to do a west coast trip!

This is just the old town part, then there is the “city” itself but it was really interesting!

So Sacramento was about 2 hours from Tahoe, so drove out there right after we moved in…mainly to go to Ikea! π We went to the Old Town area on that first trip as well and I was just not impressed with Sacramento initially. However, we made quite a few trips back out there for various things while leaving in Tahoe, and there are some things outside of the Old Town area that are actually pretty nice. There are some fun neighborhoods that have more “Portland-y” type restaurants and the city really grew on me! I think I just really liked that compared to Tahoe it was nice to be back in civilization, and then I also loved the fact that there were palm trees π

I’ve been living in Downtown Sacramento for 4 years now and I have to say, you just barely scraped the surface. Old Sac alone has some hidden gems you might have overlooked. I was really excited to see your post on the Citizen Hotel since my company had an event on the Metro Terrace just last night! I’ve been reading for a few months now and wish I had noticed your were going to be in Sacramento. I would have loved to show you the quick sights and hidden gems this city has. You know the stuff only locals know are great. I wanted to know I set up a link to your wine country visit blog on my site because I just loved hearing about your visit! Thanks for the great posts! AND… I’ll be joining your sidebar soon since I’ve won Treasure Tromp’s October Giveaway. See you soon!

Oh I’m sure there is so much more to the city!!! We were only there for a few hours one day (as our main destination was the Napa Valley) but I was really glad to see the city and really enjoyed Sacramento, what we saw of it at least!!! And can’t wait to have you on my sidebar π
