One of the things that I wanted to prioritize on this most recent trip to Iceland was driving a bit further East than we have in the past. We’ve really never gone much further East than Vik on previous trips and this time, I wanted to get to Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, along with driving out to Höfn, which are about three hours further East. So we stopped for our first night in Vik and then headed on East with our ultimate goal to get to Höfn and then backtrack back to Reykjavik.
First let me say, this part of Iceland is gorgeous. Huge mountain ranges, open roads for days, incredible vistas – we loved this part of the country and can’t wait to explore it more on future trips. We also found our favorite hotel we’ve stayed at so far in Iceland out in this area (the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon) and can’t wait to stay there again! But all in all, the drive from Höfn to Reykjavik is full of incredible natural landscapes and no shortage of places to pull over and take photos or just to take it all in.
I always get the feeling of being so small in Iceland because the landscapes are so big and overwhelming in the best possible way. It always makes me feel so grateful to call this planet home because the scenery is so beautiful and intoxicating.
Along our drive from East to West, from Höfn to Reykjavik, we just stopped when we wanted, took photos when we wanted, saw reindeer and stopped to pet horses, walked behind waterfalls and ate in local haunts in little towns. It was a lovely drive, full of amazing places and people and animals and I can’t wait to do it again!
