I seriously can’t believe it’s May already… wow, this year is flying already. Life over here behind the scenes has been pretty busy and as we near the end of COVID (hopefully!) and our year in a pandemic nightmare, I can already feel things sliding back to normal more quickly than I had expected. I’ve also had a lot of changes happening behind the scenes in my work life and I’m excited to share everything that’s been going on!
Life + Everyday
After a really slow work year last year for obvious (COVID) reasons, things are moving again in the design world and I’ve been busy! Multiple design projects going on, both for my own company and the firm I work for in Hawaii, as well as teaching part time at two different colleges in the Portland area, so I’m spending my time working long hours as of late. Also on the job front, I recently accepted a new position that I’ll start in August and I’m super excited about it. After years of part time teaching Interior Design at local colleges and universities, I’ll be starting full time teaching in August at a local university here in Portland and I’m so excited about it. I’ll be doing a large overhaul of the Interior Design program and working deeply on curriculum to bring the program up to industry standards and I’m so excited to dive in! I’ll still be doing design on the side, but starting in August teaching will be my full time gig and I’m ecstatic about it.
Travel
After a year of relatively no travel, I can feel it picking up again and I’m so thankful! Travel has, without a doubt, been such a loss for me this year and I’m so excited to get back out in the world and explore now that we’re fully vaccinated. We actually have our first post-pandemic adventure in Iceland in a couple of weeks at the end of May and I’m literally counting down the days until we can step foot in one of our favorite places. We had airline credit that was due to expire at the end of May for Iceland Air and when Iceland released new information about being allowed to be admitted into the country if you’re fully vaccinated, I jumped on it. I was fully vaccinated over a month ago and Nick finished his second dose at the end of April so we’ll be taking full advantage of access to a country that we love and that I’m hoping we get to see it like it used to be when we first starting going there years ago, without the crowds of tourists.
We also have a week booked in DC in June and we’ve booked an AirBnB to work from for the week before we have a family wedding in Virginia. I’m so excited to be somewhere different for a week and just have a change of scenery. We’ll still likely be working for most of the week prior to the wedding but just to have a different choice of restaurants and places to walk will be a very welcome change that I’m very much looking forward to.
And then in July, we’ve got a long weekend planned to New York City and I’m hopeful, that based on their current plan, everything will be open by the time we go. I’m fully ready to embrace the foodie scene in NYC again and just have a relaxing long weekend enjoying the city before we come back and dive full on into work in August.
House Renovation
We did a massive exterior overhaul of our house this Spring with a new retaining wall, new fencing and updating our original fencing as well as adding some small touches on our own in the backyard with new outdoor chairs and a metal plant stand for better use of our backyard space. I’m excited to spend a lot of time outside in our yard this Summer and the projects we’ve done have greatly updated our house exterior.
This Summer I have a few small projects I’m hoping to tackle. I’ll be painting our bedroom a light gray (from white walls now), finishing up the painting and renovation of our basement and potentially doing some DIY stuff to our second bathroom. I’m not in a huge hurry for these projects, so I’ll be getting to them as I can, but overall we’re nearing the end of projects on our 1925 Dutch Colonial house renovation and while I always like a project, I’m also looking forward to a year ahead without any massive construction projects happening, especially as I start a new job. We’ll see what the future holds for us in this house and when we decide to sell, but for now, we’re enjoying all the work we’ve put into it over the past three years!
