5 Reasons to Visit France

As I mentioned yesterday, we’re heading back to my favorite city in the world, Paris, in just a few months and I can’t get my mind off our upcoming trip lately!  So today, we’re reveling in France just a little bit more.  I loved doing my post a couple weeks ago on the 5 Reasons to Visit Morocco so I thought we’d make this more a regular occurrence and talk about reasons to visit specific places all over the world.

France is home to some of the most beautiful architecture I’ve ever laid eyes on.  From the Haussmann facades of Paris to the red washed roofs of the Riviera, France is a country out of a storybook in terms of architecture.  I love the different styles depending on which part of the country you’re in, but I can always count on gorgeous building-scapes no matter what part of France you visit.

 

The café culture in Europe is one of my favorite things about the continent, but France does it oh so well!  The café is an experience, not one to be rushed through, but one to be enjoyed and the French know that you’ll feel so much better if you take the time to enjoy your café au lait and baguette, instead of rushing through.  Take a seat, take your time and enjoy.

 

France has some of the best food in the world.  From baguettes straight out of the oven, to macarons to croissants, you will never go hungry here.  I’ve had some of the best meals of my life France and I get so excited for each trip because of it.  Food often makes a place and while French food is truly incredible, it’s just one of the things I love about the country!

 

France has hands down some of the most breath-taking museums in all of Europe.  From the Louvre to the Orangerie to the Museé d’Orsay in Paris, to the archives at Versailles and all the rest all over the country, you’ll never want for a display of art work quite like in France.  Not only are the works of art showcased here gorgeous, but the museums themselves are breath-taking.

You really can’t complain about the lack of charm in France or any French town or city.  Charm seems to ooze out of this country from cobblestone streets to colorful buildings to town squares built in checkerboard tile.  France will leave you wondering if you’re in a storybook and I always leave wanting more!

  1. I’ve never tried a LUXE guide but they sound like my kind of guide! I love learning about things off the beaten path which is why I’ve always liked Rick Steves. Sometimes (as a 30-something) I want more hip things to do. So this would be perfect for me. Plus, I LOVE Paris. I’ve been 3 times and really want to go back again and again. 🙂

    • They are great, check out their company. I have a ton of their guides now. They have great hip and non touristy things in the guides which I love!

  4. Nice, I’ve never heard of this company! But if I have to judge a book by its cover, I’d say it looks totally worth owning. Like you, I always want to go to Paris, just to be there and take in the glorious ambiance of it all. Also to shop and eat macarons 😉

  13. Aside from becoming fascinated with Paris from watching the last season of Sex and the City – Paris is the one city besides New York that I am dying to visit…. for all the exact reasons you mentioned above! I’ve been bitten by the travel bug and Paris is top of my list.

  16. I’d love to go to Paris! J and I are thinking of planning a trip there from LT sometime next academic year or in the summer. I feel like 1 week isn’t enough to explore Paris and other parts of France!

  19. I returned from Paris on Thursday and have absolutely fallen in love with the city! It was my first time there but it was only for 3 days. I’m definitely looking to spend more time there to properly explore every detail. I may even want to live there in the future!

France is glorious—lived there in the 60s for a few years, taught English and US literature there, go back as often as possible–spend last summer there, took the train to Marseilles, drove around Provence, Le Luberon, and Le Camargue–there is so much to do and see, everywhere—many countries in France—Auvergne, Dordogne, Bretagne, Normandie, Picardie–so much to see—hope to go back in the Spring for a good and long stay—important to spend a month, at least, when possible, and also imp’t to study le francais before you go, of course….

    the people are the most intelligent and best trained–they have the best schools, the best economists–see Thomas Piketty–and the Number One Health System in the World–see UN, WHO–at one fourth the cost of the terrible elitist US Health system—and it’s free to visitors, too, in fact–as it is in England, too—I know, I tried it last year with a knee injury in Cardiff and with further care in Paris—all FREE!

    All the Universities are PUBLIC!–no private really–all over Europe–and all virtually FREE, too! Think of that!
    Used to be like that here, too–before Reagan.

  64. I went to Paris once…with my best friend. We took a train from Belgium and arrived in Paris around 8am. We walked everywhere we could…for the whole day…once it started getting dark, we found the place to spend the night….and then, we went back out. My first encounter with Notre Dame was at 11pm…it was magical and eerie at the same time. That day, my first day in Paris, we walked over 13hrs. We went back to our room, tired but happy. Next morning, we headed out early…and added some extra 9hrs to our city tour before we had to catch the train back. And after all that…I left feeling as if we only got to skim over the surface of everything that Paris had to offer. I would like to go back…once again…stay longer…be prepared…explore more. “Paris is always a good idea!”
